Ukraine takes decades to train students from other countries. Since 1946, the Ukrainian universities trained about 250,000 professionals from more than 160 countries. Higher education in Ukraine, as before, the applicants come from many countries, and annual number of applicants increased. If in 2000, the country learned about 20,000 foreigners, while in 2010 this figure has more than doubled and now exceeds 44,000. The number of foreign students in Ukraine is one of the world leaders.

This is not surprising, since Ukraine has strong academic schools, provides high quality training and education meets international standards. And the price of tuition still remains lower than in many other countries. Moreover, the cost of living in the Ukrainian cities are low, and the Ukrainians have a reputation tolerant nation that is friendly to the guests. Traditionally, the greatest flow of students come from Russia, the countries of the East and the Middle East. But the geography of the region, of whom come to study in Ukraine, is much broader and covers 130 countries.

The number of foreign students are leading the biggest Ukrainian cities. The first two positions are occupied by the city of Kharkov, where 28 institutions of higher education have a license to teach foreign students, and the capital of Ukraine – Kiev – there are 41 school, which take on the training of foreigners. In those cities, has more than 17,000 students from other countries. In addition to Kiev and Kharkov, as many higher education institutions with a license to foreign students in Odessa – 18, Dnepropetrovsk – Donetsk and 16 – 11. The most attractive especially for students from other countries are medicine, engineering, economics and finance, social sciences, and linguistics.

The largest number of foreign students studying in Ukrainian Stomatological Academy as Poltava State National Medical Dental University,Lugansk State Medical University, Donetsk State Medical University, Vinnitsa National Medical University, National Aviation University in Kiev. Also popular among foreign students of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”, Kiev National University. Taras Shevchenko National University of Pharmacy (Kharkiv), the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. In each of these schools has about a thousand or more international students.

Enrollment of foreign students in Ukrainian universities and institutes in the summer begins and continues until November. For foreigners, schools allocate additional space. For a contract to train future students need to have a document of secondary education of the country. Every year the Ministry of Education and Science provides about a thousand scholarships for foreigners for the state budget under the international treaties of Ukraine.

At many universities and institutions that carry out foreign students, are open specialized preparatory departments. Foundation Course, usually lasts one year. Passage of this training course is particularly useful if you want to choose a training program in the Russian or Ukrainian language, and knowledge of these languages, you are still insufficient. During the year, the prospective student can learn Ukrainian or Russian language, both spoken and professional terminology, and deepen knowledge in core subjects.

Upon completion of the preparatory faculty graduates receive a certificate that allows them to enroll in any educational institution in Ukraine according to an interview on a contract basis. Passage of such a preparatory course provides further successful learning, and helps to adapt to future students of the new socio-cultural environment.

Citizens of other countries who have Ukrainian origin, have the same rights to education as citizens of Ukraine, at the entry level training areas such as teaching, arts, humanities, journalism. They can enter the Ukrainian university or institution on the same basis, including training on the state order. For this they need to get a referral for education in Ukraine on national-cultural society in the country of residence. Citizens of Ukraine itself, residing abroad, are entitled to receive higher education in all public schools on the same basis.

There is nearly 100% literacy in Ukraine.

11 years of schooling are mandatory. As a rule, schooling begins at the age of 6,unless your birthday is on or after September 1st.
According to (then) Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada (the Ukrainian parliament) Volodymyr Lytvyn the amount of budget financing for the sphere of education reached about 6% of Ukraine’s GDP in November 2009.

This includes first level technical and vocational schools, second level technical and vocational colleges, and universities, which are considered the third level. Teaching language is either of the following:

•    Ukrainian Language (national language)

•    Russia Language

•    English Language (optional mainly for foreign students)

Ukraine nationals study in their national languages, while foreign students have a choice of either the native language or English. This is subject to the availability of the program in English. Foreign students that opt to study in Ukrainian or Russian language undergoes a one year preparatory language course, during which they undergo a study of language and preparatory courses related to their future discipline. On graduation, they receive an additional certificate of proficiency for the language, which compensates for the additional year. Students studying in English language skip this preparatory stage, but studies the language as an independent course in the course of their academic program.

An academic year runs from 1st of September to 31st of June. This is split into two semesters having a brief two weeks winter break in January, and a long vacation from 1st of July to 31st of August. For foreign students arriving Ukraine for the first time, their academic resumption date is dependent on the chosen language of study. If the student will be studying in English language, then it is inevitable that the student arrives early enough to be ready for academic activities come September 1st. However, students that will have to go through the language learning program are allowed to arrive a bit later, but not later than October 15th, to start language classes.

Foreign students are subjected to the same regulations and guidelines governing higher education in Ukraine. The only addition is that foreign students are  expected to legalize their certificates with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on graduation. This confirms that the certificate was actually issued from a bonafide and accredited Ukrainian university. Failure to do this might put the certificate under additional scrutiny, and in some cases, rejected or invalidated when tendered.

Ukraine has a teeming population of students undergoing higher education, in different fields and specialization. Among this population is a growing community of international students, arriving Ukraine annually for educational purposes. Higher education system in Ukraine accommodates foreign students integration, with the award of certificates of international recognition, on graduation. The certificates are further legalized in the Ministry of Foreign affairs, for validation. If the students home country maintains a diplomatic mission in Ukraine, they also append a consular stamp to the certificate and the result sheet, for further authentication.

Unlike many other European countries higher education in Ukraine is comparatively cost effective. As a young sovereign nation, Ukraine is socially stable, with warm hospitality to foreigners. It is indeed, recommended for anyone seeking for quality and affordable education abroad. Marking Method For Students
Ukrainian universities use a traditional 5-point scale:
•    “5” = “excellent”
•    “4” = “good”
•    “3” = “acceptable”
•    “2” = “unacceptable”.
“5”, “4”, “3” can be described as “Satisfactory”, “2” – as “Fail”. Students who get a failing grade of “2”, have two more chances to pass an examination. Since 2006 (and even earlier in some universities), university students are graded on a rating scale of 0 to 100. These grades can be transformed to the 5-point scale approximately as follows (this system may vary a little from university to university and may change from time to time):
•    from 91 to 100 means “5”
•    from 71 to 90 means “4”
•    from 51 to 70 means “3”
•    from 0 to 50 means “2”
Both the rating scale and the 5-point scale are used in university registers.
As for secondary schools, they also used the above-mentioned 5-point scale till 2000. Since 2000 secondary schools use a 12-point scale, which could be transformed into the traditional 5-point scale as follows:

•    “12” = “5+”
•    “11” = “5”
•    “10” = “5-”
•    “9” = “4+”
•    “8” = “4”
•    “7” = “4-”
•    “6” = “3+”
•    “5” = “3”
•    “4” = “3-”
•    “3” = “2+”
•    “2” = “2”
